"Dear Mrs Moore - I have just thought of one of E. The affection you get back from your children is sixpence given as change for a sovereign." Fifteen years later I reminded her of this and she said with interest "Did I really say that, Berta? I think it very sad, rather brilliant, and quite true!"..."

"Dear MRS MOORE - (forgive wild [woeking?] or ink as my boy is writing to his girl with all my tools.) Your letter has only just reached me. The above address always will. Don't apologise. "Dear Miss Briggs, Twice a week I come in to read and answer Berta Ruck's letters. At 99 she is remarkably fit, mentally and physically, but her handwriting tends to sprawl over the page, so it is far easier for me to do her letters. You couldn't have picked a better character to ask Mrs. Oliver about than E. Nesbit. From time to time she reminisces to me at great length about E. Nesbit and her daughter..."
